Get Out and About

As the weather warms up the city welcomes back a host of events and festivals to put you in a celebratory mood, writes Pukaar Magazine’s Bethany McLean.

As usual, there are lots of great events taking place in Leicester to keep you busy this spring. There’s lots of fun to be had for the entire family as the city warms up and the trees begin to blossom. Make sure you take advantage of the exciting days out, from celebrating St George’s Day to visiting the Love Your Local Market event.

The St George’s Day Festival is happening in Orton Square on April 28, and people can learn all about the national saint, with activities ranging from a knights and princesses parade to a dragon hunt. This gives Leicester a great opportunity to take pride in the country and brings together the city’s diverse community through a celebration of England.

The Spark Festival, which is the largest children’s arts festival in England and Wales, will be running from May 19 to June 1. Families will have the chance to enjoy workshops in dance, music, art and the spoken word. The festival will be visiting local schools, theatres and community centres so look out for ways in which you and your children can get involved.

Love Your Local Market is a nationwide event taking place between May 14 to 28, and there will be lots to do during this fortnight of fun. From stuffing your face with free food samples, to learning about where your produce comes from, it will be a time to really appreciate our market and experience how it brings the community together. The incentive has been running for two years in the hope that new market traders will be inspired, and that people will gain a greater understanding of how local markets are central to feeding the community spirit.

We also have the Leicester Riverside Festival on June 7 and 8, an annual event that is fun for all the family to enjoy. You can experience food from all over the world, listen to live music, and even go on a relaxing boat trip down the river.
